The week following Free Range I exhibited my most recent series, ‘The Forgotten Ones’ at the D&AD New Blood show within the Old Truman Brewery on Brick Lane. New Blood is an show which aims to offer up the ‘New Blood’ (ie. recent creative graduates) to the industry. The exhibition was a very good experience and was a great opportunity to meet key industry contacts and do some serious networking. There was also a lot of good work around and it was quite overwhelming to see how many creatives are heading out into the industry right now and I’m sure that was not even all of them.

Due to the limitations of space I had to change the way my work was hung and opted for a vertical arrangement as opposed to the more conventional horizontal orientation. The other thing that had to be adapted was the method of which to hang the work as the walls were very thin and could not be nailed/screwed into. Plus due to the humidity and heat adhesives would not work; velcro and double-sided tape just would not stick and so another hanging method was required.

The chosen method was a single length of low stretch nylon picture chord stapled to the backs of each picture with equal spacing between images and running from the bottom picture up one side of all five, leaving a loop at the top for hanging before carrying on down the other side of the work.

Free Range 2010

The project I have been working on over the past year was exhibited at Free Range this past weekend. ‘The Forgotten Ones’ is a series which looks at the invisibility of elderly people in contemporary society. Elderly people are obstructed from view, keeping their identity hidden and separating them from the viewer in an attempt to reflect the way in which I feel many of us see the elderly. The show was very succcessful and i received some lovely comments from people about my work as well as some very interesting ideas about continuing the work and other things I could include. I always love to get feedback, good or bad, so this was a treat and thanks to everyone that shared their thoughts. My work was picked out from the UELPHOTO10 show along with the work of print maker Lizzy Stewart and photographer Craig Madden and was featured in a review of the show on Creative View. Recode Promo

Spent a lovely sunny Sunday afternoon with Recode. Had some very fun times and a lot of laughs and even got to see them play again, which was great. Only problem was that obviously the gig had not been very well advertised and so hardly anyone came, which was a shame. Although this did allow me to get some good pictures(more on this in the next post).

Even though the turn out was so poor Recode played like they were rocking Glastonbury and was a great set!

After the show we went up to the local woods to take some promo photographs, which I had been planning to do for a while. The sun was on its way down and it was an amazing location, with lots to work with, including some huge stoney Anyways, I set up some lights and this is what I came away with.

These were all lit with one SB800 through a softbox, and one bare speedlight behind the subjects to separate them from the background.

Recode at Strongrooms

I went along to a gig last night in Shoreditch at the fantastic Strongrooms to see Recode play. Whilst normally they are a full electric band, last night was just an acoustic set due to the size of the venue. However, they were still amazing. If you would like to check them out (and I strongly recommend that you do!) then I should head on over to their myspace. They are a four piece band from nr Bath and have a REALLY strong unique sound. They are all very talented individuals and are such a lovely bunch!

I did my usual trick and took a few photographs while they played their set and I even managed to grab a quick shot (I mean in like 5 mins) at the end of the night with a couple of speedlights. Must say thanks for a wicked night you guys and to Josh and Danielle for being my amazing voice activated lightstands. Enjoy!!

Boxettes at Cargo

On the 11th of April I went along to the Boxettes showcase at Cargo in Shoreditch. Also featuring the legendary Jarvis Cocker and the great hip-hop duo Stig and Syntax. The night was absolutely brilliant. Haven’t been to a gig that packed in a long time and the atmosphere was amazing. The Boxettes are absolutely brilliant, a really really (did I mention really) AMAZING group. You just have to see them. They are a completely vocal group and make all their own rhythms and bass using their voices, which is crazy. Among them is the current female world beatbox champion Bellatrix and four other individual and insanely talented vocalists. I cannot explain in words just how good these guys are. Big Issue Guy

Whilst walking around in Bristol City Center with my camera I was tapped on my shoulder. I turned around to find the Big Issue guy, who cheerily asked if I would like to take his photograph. I was shocked, not very often that you get asked if you can take someones picture so I of course, agreed! This is what I came away with and of course a copy of the Big Issue too! What a lovely man. Was a genuine pleasure to meet him.

Puddles at Dusk

Firstly apologies for the extreme lack of posts recently, just haven’t got around to getting anything ready for the blog. Anyway, here is a picture I took the other night whilst out around the docks where I live. It had been raining quite hard for a while and I knew there would be some lovely big puddles to work with, so I went out to see what I could get. This is the result. Only managed about 20 minutes before the rain started coming down again.

Prizefighter!

On the 4th of december I attended the Prize Fighter light Welter weights championship at Olympia, Kensington. Prizefighter is a fast paced tournament featuring 8 fighters in 7 fights all in one night. Each fight consists of 3 rounds each three minutes long.

Me and my friend Josh Ainsworth (also a photographer) were very kindly invited along by Leyton Orient football club to record their attendance at Prizefighter as part of their community sports programme. They are all a very lovely bunch of people and we had a lot of good laughs.

The fighting was immense. I had never been to watch boxing live before and I must say it is an experience. You CANNOT get the full force of a fight from your living room.

We also met up with some lovely guys from Matchroom who were happy to show us around and give us a few pointers, which was fantastic.

Gavin Rees took the title after an intense final against Colin Lynes. It was a great experience and one I shall never forget. Thanks again to all the guys that made this happen. Leyton Orient FC thanks for providing the opportunity and being such a lovely bunch of people, and massive thanks to Matchroom too, for providing us with tickets for the event.

NICOLAS HENRI

Whilst browsing the web, looking at pictures- a favourite past-time of mine! I stumbled across a very impressive Swiss photographer called Nicolas Henri. His work is AWESOME. Great concepts, very competent technically and just really beautiful images. Focusing on Portraiture, Fashion and also some conceptual art his style is very unique. Colours are rich and well controlled and the black and whites are sumptuous. If you have not heard of this photographer I strongly suggest you take a look at his website right now. It is extremely inspirational.
